Three booked for slaughtering calves in Maharashtra

Nashik, Mar 26(IBNS) : Three people have been booked for allegedly slaughtering calves in Nashik in Maharashtra in one of the first incidents of crackdown after the state government declared a total ban on beef in the state.

Reports said Malegaon police have seized the meat and started a case against three accused who are absconding.

If convicted under the new law, the accused will be sentenced to five-year jail term with an an additional fine of Rs 10,000.

Under the new law in Maharashtra, even possession of beef is a crime.

Cow slaughter has been banned in Maharashtra since 1976 but the new Act bans slaughter of bulls and bullocks also, though it it allows the slaughter of buffaloes.
