Srinagar, Jan 15 (UNI) Security forces shot dead at least 3 militants in a fierce encounter in the Shopian area of south Kashmir on Thursday.

Reports said the encounter was still going on in forest areas.

The operation by the army and police started following a  tip-off that militants were hiding in the area. The troops cordoned off the forest and the militants hurled grenades and opened fire leading to a gun battle, Lt. Col. Nitin Joshi said.

"We've recovered three bodies," Inspector-General of Police Abdul Ghani Mir said. "Now we're searching the area, and we're looking for two more bodies" of militants suspected of having been shot during the battle."

On Tuesday, army jawans killed an alleged terrorist in a gunbattle at Sopore in north Kashmir.
