TMC delegation meets Prez Kovind, demands resignation of SG Tushar Mehta for 'meeting' Suvendu Adhikari

New Delhi/IBNS: Two Trinamool Congress parliamentarians on Monday met with President Ram Nath Kovind and demanded an "immediate resignation" of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta "on grounds of gross misconduct and impropriety".

Mehta has been caught in the midst of a controversy after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Suvendu Adhikari, who is an accused in two scam cases, had allegedly met him at his residence.

TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, seated beside her colleague Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, said, "... It is not only a bias, conflict of interest but also perceived bias that he allows an accused to come into his residence and have a meeting with him."

The TMC has sought the removal on the ground of "conflict of interest" as Mehta is advising the investigating agencies in two scams where Adhikari is an accused.

Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, is accused in Saradha chit fund and Narada cases.

However, Adhikari and Mehta have denied any meeting. Mehta said the BJP leader had reached his residence but he did not meet him.

Following which, the TMC has been demanding the Solicitor General to furnish the CCTV footage of his residence.

Mounting pressure on Mehta, TMC national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP, Abhishek Banerjee, on Monday tweeted, "Even after 72 hours, Mr Tushar Mehta, Hon'ble SG of India, has failed to release the 20 mins of CCTV footage of his OWN HOUSE to corroborate his OWN STATEMENT. Mr SG, with such weak defence you can continue serving as @BJP4India's SECRET GENERAL, not INDIA’S SOLICITOR GENERAL."

Last week, TMC MPs Derek O'Brien, Roy and Moitra had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the removal of Mehta as the Solicitor General on the same issue.
