TMC retains dominance in Bengal, heads for complete sweep in Panchayat polls
Kolkata, May 17 (IBNS): Amid allegations of massive violence and booth rigging, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party on Thursday retained its dominance in West Bengal by emerging victorious at the Panchayat elections.
Out of 31,802 Gram Panchayat seats, Mamata Banerjee's party bagged 16,166 seats.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the main challenger in the rural polls coming second with 4,020 seats.
The Left has come third with just 1,042 seats while the Congress party managed only 10.
According to reports, activists of TMC have allegedly indulged in stamping ballot papers even on results day.
The panchayat elections were held for 621 zilla parishads, 6,123 panchayat samitis and 31,802 gram panchayats in West Bengal on May 14 amid widespread violence in which about 20 people were killed.
The counting of votes began at 8 am amid tight security, the State Election Commission officials said.
