TransAsia plane crashes into river in Taipei, 12 killed

Taipei, Feb 4 (IBNS): A TransAsia Airways flight crashed into a river in Taipei on Wednesday after hitting a bridge, killing at least 12 people as per media reports.

The TransAsia Airways flight GE235 crash injured 16, including those on the ground, said reports as the plane clipped a bridge and landed in the river.

Reports said the plane was carrying 58 people. At least 30 people are still unaccounted for.

The plane was a French-made twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 with a two-pilot air crew.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, rescue operation is on with the help of military. Inflatable boats were pressed into service.

Sources said the flight from Taipei to Kinmen lost contact with flight controllers at about 10.55 am and the fuselage landed in the Keelung River near the city's downtown Sungshan airport.
