Trawler sinks in Bay of Bengal, 7 missing

Kolkata, Aug 4 (IBNS) At least seven people were missing while eight were rescued when a trawler sank in the Bay of Bengal in rough weather near the Sundarbans islands of West Bengal amid reports that 40 trawlers were missing.

However, West Bengal Coast Guard Commander Sharad Mantri said while seven fishermen were missing, all the other 40-odd trawlers could be traced and they are safe.

Coast is monitoring the operations to rescue the people and trawlers that were caught in stormy weather.

The trawler which sank is identified as Suryanarayan and the incident occurred near Jambu Dwip (island) in the wee hours, Mantri said.

"While the missing are not traced they could have swam to safety somewhere," he said.

Another trawler- Saraswati- which it was thought had sunk, however, survived the storm and anchored in an island.

West Bengal Disaster Management Minister Javed Khan earlier said two trawlers had sunk and two people were missing while 20 were rescued.

Khan said he is monitoring the situation.
