UP Chief Secretary puts death toll at 30 in NTPC tragedy, PM declares compensation
Lucknow, Nov 2 (IBNS): The NTPC tragedy has claimed the lives of 30 people, the media quoted the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh as saying, on Thursday.
On Wednesday, a boiler blast in the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant in Unchahar in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district left several dead and many injured.
Meanwhile, according to a tweet from the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi " has approved an ex- gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the accident at the NTPC plant in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. PM has approved Rs. 50,000 each for those injured due to the accident."
On Wednesday, the PM had tweeted, "Deeply pained by the accident at the NTPC plant in Raebareli. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. The situation is being closely monitored & officials are ensuring normalcy is restored."
An inquiry has been set up by NTPC management to investigate the reasons for the accident.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into NTPC power plant blast in Rae Bareli, the Times of India reported on Thursday.
According to local reports, the blast occurred while cleaning the boiler.
"All possible measures are being taken to provide immediate relief to the families of affected people in close coordination with the district administration," the statement added.
President Ram Nath Kovind condemned the incident and tweeted: "Anguished by loss of lives in power plant mishap in Raebareli. Condolences to bereaved families. Govt is helping injured."
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries, media reported.
According to media reports on Thursday, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi arrived in Rae Bareli to meet the victims of the blast. Putting his Gujarat tour on hold, Rahul Gandhi flew in from Surat to reach the Rae Bareli hospital.
His mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi represents the constituency in Parliament, but have not been able to visit owing to her poor health, media reported.
