Urmila Matondkar gets police cover after Congress-BJP clash in Mumbai suburb

Mumbai, Apr 15 (IBNS): Actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar was granted police protection after a scuffle broke out between Congress and BJP supporters while she was campaigning at a coastal suburb in Mumbai on Monday, media reports said.

Matondkar told media that this might be done to instill fear in her.

She has therefore sought police protection as she fears for her life.

"Shocked at the blatant violation of code of conduct and hostile acts by BJP workers.. I was constrained to lodge police complaint for my own safety and to save the dignity of my female supporters.. #AapliMumbaichiMulagi," Matondkar tweeted.

Congress has fielded Urmila Matondkar from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra.

The decision to field the actress was taken by the Central Election Committee of the Congress.

Matondkar, 45, joined Congress on Mar 27.

Though she was a prominent film star in the 1990s, the actress has not been seen much in mainstream Hindi film for several years now.

She is known for her roles in films such as Rangeela, Mast and Bhoot.
