Uttar Pradesh : Mulayam cancels party meeting, both factions of SP to head for Delhi today

Lucknow, Jan 2 (IBNS) : As the infighting in the Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party continued to touch new heights each day, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the beleaguered patriarch, on Monday cancelled a party meeting scheduled for December five and asked party candidates to head to their constituencies and prepare for the assembly elections.

Mulayam Singh's younger brother Shivpal Yadav tweeted on Monday morning that  Thursday's meeting has been cancelled.

The assembly elections in the state  are likely to be announced this week.

According to NDTV, the meeting was likely to have been poorly attended with most party workers and leaders siding Mulayam's  son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister  Akhilesh Yadav.

The Samajwadi Party split on Sunday with Akhilesh being declared top boss in place of his father and the party's founder, at a massive show of strength in a public ground in Lucknow with the majority of party leader and workers throwing their weight in favour of the Mulayam scion.

The NDTV report said Mulayam Singh and his brother Shivpal could head to Delhi on Monay,  where they are expected to meet politician Amar Singh, who was in London as the party split.

Ram Gopal Verma, Mulayam's another brother, who stands tall behind Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, will  visit the Election Commission in Delhi on Monday to stake claim to the Samajwadi Party's "cycle" symbol. The Mulayam Singh Yadav faction too is expected to claim the symbol.
