Mumbai, Feb 21 (IBNS): Veteran communist leader Govind P Pansare, who was shot at by two unidentified assailants in Kolhapur on Feb 16, died in Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital on Friday night, reports said.

He was shifted to the Mumbai hospital in an air ambulance but he succumbed to injuries at around 10 pm in the night, said the hospital.

Pansare, who had led an anti-road toll protest, was shot at along with his wife when the  couple went out for a morning walk in and around their home in Kolhapur. His wife, however, survived the attack and has been recovering.

The miscreants accosted the ageing couple and fired at least four rounds from close range before escaping the scene, sources said.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had condemned the attack.

The CM said that 10 teams would be formed and state director general of police would supervise the investigation.
