Visva Bharati VC gheraoed, fails to attend prayer function of Pous Mela

Bolpur (West Bengal), Dec 23 (IBNS): A section of students of the secondary schools of Visva-Bharati (VB) and their parents are staging a sit-in demonstration demanding scrapping of the newly-introduced admission policy, media reports said.

The new policy stopped the “internal quota” system for the school students while getting admitted in the higher classes in the college and university.

The protestors did not let vice-chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta and three other senior officials go since Monday and gheraoed them at the central office of the VB.

As a result: the VC could not take part in the prayer function on Tuesday morning that marks the beginning of the traditional Pous Mela every year - a cultural fair once started by Rabindranath Tagore’s father.

President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid is also scheduled to reach Santiniketan to lay the foundation stone of Bangladesh Bhavan.

“I strongly condemn it. Pous Mela is a cultural heritage for all of us. The agitators should have chosen a different time to vent their protests on the issue. It is absolutely unacceptable that they gheraoed the VC stopping him to attend such an important event,” said academician Amal Mukhopadhyay.
