Water levels of Siang, Brahmaputra gradually recede, flood submerge 10 villages of Assam’s Dhemaji district
Guwahati, Oct 21 (IBNS): The water level of Siang river has gradually receded after the threat of sudden flood from a landslip-induced barrier in Yarlung Tsangpo river in China.
According to the Central Water Commission, water level of Siang river at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh has been receded from 152.97 metre on Saturday at 3 pm to 150.44 metre on Sunday at 10.08 am.
In view of emergency situation following threat of sudden flood, 32 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Four NDRF teams have been deployed in Dhemaji district and one each in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam.
Another eight NDRF teams have been deployed at Pasighat area in Arunachal Pradesh to tackle any type situation.
Meanwhile, more than 10 villages of Assam’s Dhemaji district have been inundated after sudden increase of water levels of Brahmaputra river last night.
NDRF, SDRF teams and the district administration have rescued several people from the flood affected areas.
The NDRF team has also rescued few people residing in the small islands of Siang river at Pasighat area in Arunachal Pradesh.
Deputy Commissioner of East Siang district Tamiyo Tatak said that, a high volume of water reached at Pasighat at around 7-30 am on Saturday, but it receded after few hours and there is no reason for any panic.
“We have taken all measures to tackle any situation and asked people residing on bank of Siang river to move safer places,” Tamiyo Tatak said.
Earlier, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam government had issued high alert about a possible flash flood after a natural barrier was created by a massive landslide on the upper stream of the Yarlung Tsangpo river in China which blocked the river flow.
Beijing informed New Delhi that, the natural overflow of the landslide induced barrier occurred around 5 pm on Oct 19, and the discharge was about 18000 cubic metres per second.
On the other hand, the administration of Assam’s Dibrugarh district has suspended all ferry services between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji for indefinite period.
