West Bengal Guv Jagdeep Dhankar appeals for peace amid surge of violence and arson across the state

The agitators attacked government properties, particularly the Indian Railways and buses on the highway, in which millions of commuters got stranded at different stations.

More than dozen vehicles were set on fire, railway stations were also ransacked, train services in both Howrah and Sealdah sections were largely affected forcing the both Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway to cancel many long distance trains.

"Distressed and pained at events unfolding in the state," Mr Dhankar said in his Twitter account today.

He said, "Chief Minister as per oath has to ‘bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India..’ and I as Governor will ‘to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution
and the law.'"

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in an appeal to the people said everyone should remain calm and refrain from stopping the train and bus services.

She said one should not worry about the CAB and NRC because her government would not allow the implementation of such legislation.
