Kolkata/IBNS: In an apparent setback for the Trinamool Congress, West Bengal Minister Laxmi Ratan Shukla on Tuesday stepped down from his post.

Shukla, who was the junior Sports Minister, sent his resignation letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The CM has reportedly accepted the resignation letter too.

Shukla, a former cricketer, has also resigned as the Trinamool district president (urban) in Howrah.

However, he is still a party MLA who was elected as a Trinamool candidate in 2016.

In one of the reasons behind his resignation, Shukla said he wants to quit politics and return to cricket.

He was very recently seen visiting Woodlands Hospital when ailing Indian cricket board chief Sourav Ganguly was admitted.

Shukla's resignation has triggered a speculation over his possible joining in the BJP, which has very recently welcomed various turncoats.
