West Bengal: One shot dead in Bhangar clash

Kolkata, May 11 (IBNS): At least one person was killed and another was seriously injured after the followers of Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s local leader Arabul Islam allegedly shot bullets aiming at the supporters of an independent candidate for upcoming panchayat election in Bhangar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Friday evening, reports said.

According to reports, supporters of an independent candidate were holding a campaign rally at Polerhat-II panchayat area for upcoming election and when the march reached Notunhat More, Arabul Islam and his gang allegedly fired several rounds of bullets aiming at the rally.

At least two persons were shot in the firing and they were rushed to a local hospital where one of them was pronounced dead.

Local sources said that the deceased has been identified as Hafizul Mollah who was a resident of nearby Machhibhanga village.

Following the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed local authorities to arrest Arabul Islam and others involved in the clash and firing, a source in Nabanna told IBNS.

Meanwhile, the state election commission has sought reports on the incident from the SP of Baruipur Police District and the DM of South 24 Parganas district. 

According to the last update came in, a huge police force along with Rapid Action Force (RAF), combat force and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel, led by Baruipur Police District's SP Arijit Sinha, are on their way to the scene.

However, main accused in the case, Arabul Islam, refused to react on the incident.
