West Bengal: Two killed in oil tanker-truck collision in Howrah

Kolkata, Nov 22 (IBNS): At least two persons were killed and a security staff was seriously injured as an oil tanker collided head-on with another truck and caught fire on Kona Expressway (NH 117) near Unsani area under Jagacha Police Station limits in Kolkata's twin city Howrah on the wee hours of Thursday, reports said.

According to reports, the accident took place at around 4 am. under Garpa rail bridge near Santragachi, barely 14 km. from Kolkata.

Following the collision, both the tanker and truck caught fire and several explosions were heard.

Driver of the vehicles were burnt to death inside their cabins and a civic volunteer, who was on duty at the area, was seriously hurt in the accident.

As many as six fire tenders and local police rushed to the scene and firemen fought for nearly two hours to bring the massive blaze under control.

Locals said that several roadside shops were gutted due to the major fire that spread from the oil-tanker.

Meanwhile, train service in South Eastern Railway (SER)'s Howrah/Santragachi-Amta section was hit as rail's overhead wires were destroyed in the massive blaze.

Police said that traffic on Kona Expressway was disrupted for hours due to the deadly mishap.

However, according to the latest update came in, train service in the line has been resumed while traffic movement is normal now on Kona Expressway, which connects NH 2 with Kolkata.
