When in Bengal, speak Bengali: Mamata warns 'outsiders'

Kanchrapara, Jun 14 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday while addressing a party meeting in West Bengal's Kanchrapara, said non-Bengalis will have to speak in Bengali language in order to reside in the state.

Banerjee said she will not allow her state to become Gujarat.

She urged all to revive the cultural heritage of Bengal.

"You can listen to Hindi songs or Gazals...I don't mind, I love all states but I will not allow Bengal to become Gujarat. Gujarat has a history of communal violence," she said.

The CM said that if she can speak in other languages when she visits different states, why can't people speak in Bengali while residing here?

"I speak in Hindi when I visit Uttar Pradesh. When I visit Punjab, I speak in Punjabi. I don't know Tamil still I greet Tamilians with little bit Tamil language. Similarly, if you stay in Bengal you have to speak in Bengali language," she said.

In an ultimatum to "outsiders", Banerjee said: "I will not allow outsiders to create violence in Bengal."

Condemning attacks on minorities, the CM said: "Do I ever go to Hindi speaking people to scare them? Then why will they torture the Bengalis over here?"

She warned oppositions of not testing her patience.

"I have nothing against non-Bengalis living in Bengal. But BJP is trying to create a Bengali and non-Bengali divide. I would urge them not to test our patience. We will never allow Bengalis to become homeless in Bengal," Banerjee said.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, the TMC is marginally ahead of BJP with just 22 seats while the BJP made a significant entry in the state politics by bagging 18 of 42 states.
