Patna is abuzz with speculation over who will succeed Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister, following the 10-time incumbent’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha election on Thursday.

While it is certain that the next Chief Minister will be from the BJP, the party’s penchant for surprises has kept political observers and citizens guessing.

The debate in the state capital revolves around geography and caste considerations, though the final decision rests solely with the BJP leadership.

Several names are emerging as contenders for the top job:

Samrat Chaudhary

The 57-year-old Deputy Chief Minister is widely seen as Kumar’s political shadow. Belonging to the Koeri caste, which has close ties with Kumar’s Kurmi community, Chaudhary is considered a candidate who could maintain the delicate caste balance in the state.

However, critics note his political beginnings with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), questioning his loyalty to the BJP.

Nityanand Rai

The junior Union Home Minister and close aide of Amit Shah, Rai belongs to the Yadav community.

Observers believe his elevation could impact the RJD’s Yadav vote bank, although the BJP has precedent for Yadav leaders in chief ministerial positions, such as Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh.

Sanjeev Chaurasia

The MLA from Patna’s Digha seat comes from a politically influential family.

His father, Ganga P Chaurasia, was among the founders of the BJP in Bihar and later served as Governor of Sikkim. Chaurasia’s backward caste identity is seen as an asset, but some warn that choosing him could centralize power in Patna.

Janak Ram

At 52, Janak Ram from the Ravidas community is a potential choice if the BJP seeks a Dalit Chief Minister.

Critics, however, note that another Ravidas leader, Shivesh Kumar, has already been nominated for the Rajya Sabha, suggesting the party might opt for representation from a different community.

Dilip Jaiswal

A former state minister from the Vaishya community, Jaiswal could be considered if the BJP wants a Vaishya leader.

Gayatri Devi

The MLA from Parihar in Sitamarhi, also from the Yadav community, is in the discussion as a possible candidate. If chosen, she would become the second woman Chief Minister of Bihar after Rabri Devi.

Despite the flurry of speculation, party insiders emphasize that Nitish Kumar’s approval will be crucial in finalizing the successor, ensuring continuity and stability in Bihar’s political landscape.
