Will have city mayors elected directly if Congress comes to power: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi, Apr 1 (UNI): After promising Rs 72,000 a year in accounts of poorest 20 per cent families in the country, host of incentives for youth wanting to start their own businesses and the filling up all government vacancies by March 2020, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised that if elected to power his party would move to directly elected mayors with five year terms and elected councils to improve the quality of life in cities.
In a post on social media, the Congress president said: "Real smart cities are built by good leaders. To improve quality of life in our cities we will move to directly elected mayors with 5 yr terms & elected councils. Administration will be run by multidisciplinary teams of specialists & experts accountable to the Mayor & council.’’
This is the latest in the line of promises made by the Congress president in the run up to the release of the party manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.
In the past few days, he has unveiled the NYAY scheme under which the party has promised to deposit Rs 72,000 per annum in the accounts of poorest 20 per cent families of the country of the party comes to power.
He has also announced a host of incentives for youngsters who want to start their own businesses including easy availability of bank credit.
The Congress president has also announced that the party will fill all government vacancies by March 2020 if it comes to power.
