Will quit Congress but won't join BJP, says former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh

Chandigarh/IBNS: Amid the political turmoil in Punjab, former state Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh Thursday said he will quit the Congress but won't switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a day after meeting Union Home Minister and saffron leader Amit Shah.

"So far I am in the Congress but I will not remain in the Congress. I have already made my position very clear. I will not be treated in this manner," Singh told NDTV.

"I am not joining the BJP," he added.

Meanwhile, Singh has also removed the name of Congress from his Twitter bio.

Singh Thursday met National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, a day after calling on Shah.

Singh met the two in the consecutive days in the backdrop of his worsened relation with his party, Congress.

The former Chief Minister turned rebel after he was asked to step down by the top brass followed by the appointment of a Dalit leader to the top post.

Punjab got its first Dalit Chief Minister in the form of Charanjit Singh Channi, who happens to be close to Singh's rival in the Congress, Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Singh's equation with the Congress took its first hit when Sidhu was picked as the Punjab Congress Committee chief.

However, taking the top brass to a complete surprise, Sidhu Tuesday resigned as the state president, plunging the Congress into a deep political crisis in the state.

According to reports, Sidhu was upset over a few recent appointments and cabinet reshuffling.

Now the situation once again turned ugly for the Punjab Congress as the state will head to assembly polls early 2022.
