Win for Tata Sons as Supreme Court backs removal of Cyrus Mistry as chairman

New Delhi/IBNS: In a big win for Tata Sons, the Supreme Court on Friday backed the removal of Cyrus Mistry as the chairman of Tata Group in 2016.

A Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde, said the decision to remove Mistry was right.

"All questions of law are in favour of Tata Group," said the judges as quoted by NDTV.

Reacting to the judgement, Ratan Tata said on Twitter, "It is not an issue of winning or losing. After relentless attacks on my integrity and the ethical conduct of the group, the judgment upholding Tata Sons is a validation or the values and ethics that have always been the guiding principles of the group. It reinforces the fairness and justice displayed by our judiciary."

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) in Dec 2019 had restored Mistry as the chairman of the conglomerate.

The order was challenged by Tata Sons later.

The order has now been scrapped.

Mistry had succeeded Ratan Tata in 2012 as the chairman of Tata Sons. Mistry was sacked four years later.
