Woman branded witch beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh

Agra, Aug 3 (IBNS) : A 62-year-old woman, branded a witch by villagers, was beaten to death by a mob in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district on Wednesday, NDTV reported.

According to reports, the villagers alleged that the  woman was about to cut the hair of a young girl sleeping outside her home-an act superstitiously believed to be an occult practice.

The woman, Maan Devi, had reportedly gone to the fields to relieve herself very early in the morning and while returning home she was attacked.
"My mother begged them to spare her, saying she was not a witch, but they did not listen," NDTV quoted her son Gulab Singh as saying.  A murder case has been filed against two neighbours, who are absconding.
