Won't oppose Italian marine's plea: Swaraj
Massimiliano Latorre was hospitalized in New Delhi recently.
Speaking at a press conference here, Sushma Swaraj said: "If the courts allow him to go home on humanitarian grounds, we will not oppose it."
A Supreme Court panel has directed the Central government to respond to Latorre's plea seeking to go back to his country for his treatment.
The next hearing on the issue will be held on Sept 12.
The case dates back to 2012 where two Italian marines being held in India for allegedly shooting to death two Indian fishermen.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August had a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the request of theItalian side.
Renzi requested for early resolution of the Italian Marine issue.
"Modi emphasized that a fair and early resolution was in mutual interest. He conveyed that the matter is subjudice before the Supreme Court of India in writ petitions filed by the marines and encouraged the Italian side to allow the judicial process to take its own course. In this context, he emphasized that Indian judiciary is free, fair and independent and we are convinced that it will take all aspects into consideration in adjudicating the case," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.
