American writer, filmmaker William Peter Blatty dies

Los Angeles, Jan 14 (IBNS): American writer and filmmaker William Peter Blatty has died.

He is best known for his 1971 novel The Exorcist and for the Academy Award-winning screenplay of its film adaptation.

Blatty passed away Thursday evening at a hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, his widow, Julie Alicia Blatty, told CNN.

He was 89.

Julie Alicia Blatty was quoted as syaing by the CNN website, "It was multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. He was only diagnosed last month."

Mournign his death, filmmaker

William Friedkin tweeted: "William Peter Blatty, dear friend and brother who created The Exorcist passed away yesterday."


Author Stephen King said: "RIP William Peter Blatty, who wrote the great horror novel of our time. So long, Old Bill."
