What Is the Third Trimester?

The third trimester is the final stage of pregnancy. It begins at week 28 and continues until childbirth, which typically occurs around week 40, although a full-term pregnancy can last anywhere between 37 and 42 weeks.

How the Baby Develops

During the third trimester, the baby undergoes rapid growth and development.
  • The baby gains weight quickly.
  • The lungs, brain and other vital organs continue to mature.
  • Bones become stronger, while the skull remains flexible to aid childbirth.
  • The baby usually turns into a head-down position in preparation for delivery.
  • By full term, the baby generally weighs 2.5–4 kg and measures 48–53 cm in length.
Common Challenges for Expectant Mothers

The third trimester can be physically demanding, with many women experiencing symptoms such as:
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Back pain
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Braxton Hicks ("practice") contractions
  • Increased fatigue
Deepika's latest social media update resonated with many expectant mothers by highlighting one of the most common discomforts of late-stage pregnancy—repeated nighttime trips to the bathroom.
