India mourns Zohra Segal's demise

Mumbai, July 10 (IBNS): With the 'Laadli' of Bollywood Zohra Segal passing away at the age of 102 in a Delhi hospital on Thursday, the entire Hindi film fraternity, celebrities and politicians mourned her death and took it to micro-blogging site Twitter to express their feelings in solidarity.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: "Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102 yrs ..what a journey and what an immensely loveable co star !  Prayers for her blessed soul !!"

Actress Priyanka Chopra tweeted: "102 n a legacy that will  always be a part of Indian cinema.It was an honour to know #ZohraSehgal and to b a part of films while she was.RIP."

Director-producer Karan Johar posted: "RIP Zohra Sehgal.....what a life....it's that moment when you truly celebrate the end of such a legendary and glorious era...."

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra tweeted: "RIP Zohra Sehgal ji: A true legend :worked with her in veer zara and rembember her as a charming happy person :

Writer Shobhaa De ‏noted: "Zohra deserved better. Still not too late to make it up ... she was a pioneer... an extraordinary woman. Honour her !!!"

TV anchor Sophie Choudry tweeted: "RIP Zohra Sehgal ji..you beautiful #GrandOldLady .. Absolute legend & powerhouse of talent..The world was blessed with your presence."

Actress and producer Dia Mirza ported: "102 years of greatness. I will always love you Zohraji. RIP #GrandOldLady of #IndianCinema #ZohraSehgal."

Director Madhur Bhandarkar posted a picture of Zohra Segal during her stage performance on Twitter and wrote: "Sad to hear about Zohra Sehgal's demise...legend in herself...full of life. Inspiration for many.RIP"

Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai ‏tweeted: "Zohra Sehgal: RIP"

Trade analyst Taran Adarash tweeted: "Zohra Sehgal passes away. End of an era. You will be missed. RIP."

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain ‏noted: "Zohra Sehgal, veteran actor is no more. She loved India so much, refused to leave India during partition even though family shifted."

Journalist Barkha Dutt posted on her Twitter account: "Zohra. She always smiled. What a brilliant century. RIP"

Director Pritish Nandy tweeted: "Zohra Sehgal, what a person! what an actor! RIP."

Born on April 27, 1912, she commenced her career as dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935 and worked with him for the next eight years.

She has appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films and television series.

The legendary actor-dancer also appeared in Bhaji on the Beach (1992), The Mystic Masseur (2001), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Dil Se.. (1998) and Cheeni Kum (2007); and the TV series, The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Tandoori Nights (1985–87), Amma and Family (1996).

At the age of 90, she got the lead character around whom the story revolved in the 2002 film 'Chalo Ishq Ladaaye', where she had stunt sequences, emotional scenes, among others.

Segal also acted with Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre for fourteen years.

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001, and in 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

She bagged the Padma Vibhushan honour in 2010.
