Assam’s farmer daughter Hima creates history
Guwahati, July 13 (IBNS) : 18-year-old Hima Das, daughter of a farmer from Kandhulimari village near Dhing in central Assam’s Nagaon district, created history on Thursday as she clinched the gold medal in the 400m final at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Hima Das scripted history after she clocked 51.46 seconds to claim top position and becoming first Indian sprinter to do so in a global track event.
Hima clocked 51.32 seconds to finish at the sixth position in the Commonwealth Games 400m final in Gold Coast in last.
Recently, Hima won gold medals in Women 200 m and 400 m race in the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships held at the Sarusajai Sports complex in Guwahati.
The new Indian sensation sprinter completed the Women 200 m race by taking 23.10 seconds and Women 400 m race by taking 51.13 seconds.
People of Kandhulimari village and from the neighbourhood had assembled at her house to celebrate Hima’s victory.
Hima started off with football playing with boys in her village, but a local coach advised her to take up athletics.
Hima was spotted by Nipon Das, an athletics coach with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, during the inter district athletics meet, where she won gold in 100 m and 200 m event.
From that inter district meet, Hima improving her performance in each meet.
Hima’s coach Nipon Das said that, what she do, it is a history of India. It is a proud moment. In last world championship, Neeraj Chopra won gold in Javelin and now Hima Das is the first Indian track athlete to win a medal IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships.
On the other hand, her father Ranjit Das said, "We are very delighted about hearing that, my daughter created history. We hope that, she will win gold medal in the upcoming championships and offered our prayer to god for her bright future."
“We are happy for her performance. She got the goal after her hard works from childhood,” Hima’s mother Jonali Das said.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, we all the people Assam and the entire nation are proud of her performance.
“An Assamese girl, who clinched the gold medal in the global event by hardwork has created history. We congratulated Hima Das for her outstanding performance,” Sonowal said.
