England beat Afghanistan in their last group match

Sydney, Mar 13 (IBNS): England managed to win their last group stage match of the World Cup as they defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets via D/L method here on Friday.

England had displayed a poor show in this edition of the World Cup and exited early as they won only two matches out of six they have played in the 50-over mega cricket event.

In their last match, England reached the target of 101 runs by losing one wicket from 25 overs.

In a rain reduced match, Afghanistan earlier scored 111 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 36.2 overs.

England's Ian Bell remained unbeaten at 52.

England managed to finish at the fifth spot int he Pool A while New Zealand topped the group by winning all the six games including their last encounter against Bangladesh on Friday.

Apart from New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.
