England thrash India by 227 runs in Chennai

Chennai/IBNS: Riding on Joe Root's terrific performance and a superb bowling, England thrashed India in the first Test match by 227 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 420, India were bowled out for 192 in the second innings.

Skipper Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were the top scorers for India with their 72 and 50 respectively.

England's Jack Leach and James Anderson picked four and three wickets respectively.

Jogra Archer, Dominic Bess and Ben Stokes clinched one wicket each.

India were bowled out for 337 in the first innings.

England scored 578 and 178 in the two innings respectively.
