Jamnagar/UNI: Former Indian cricket all-rounder Salim Durrani passed away at his house in Gujarat's Jamnagar on Sunday. He was 88.

His death was confirmed by sources close to the family. He had been living with his younger brother, Jahangir Durrani, in Jamnagar.

He had undergone proximal femoral nail surgery after he broke his thigh bone in a fall in January this year.

Durrani was a left-handed batter and left-arm spinner, and represented India in 29 Tests, scoring 1202 runs and taking 75 wickets.

In domestic cricket, he played Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He was most famous for his outstanding performance in India's series victory against England in 1961-62.

In his tributes to Salim Durrani, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote: "Salim Durani Ji was a cricketing legend, an institution in himself. He made a key contribution to India’s rise in the world of cricket. On and off the field, he was known for his style. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace."

Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri expressed his grief and tweeted: "Easily one of the most colourful cricketers of India - Salim Durani. Rest in Peace."

Durrani was born in Afghanistan and had Pashtun origins. He was known for his batting and bowling prowess that left the spectators thrilled.

He will always be remembered for hitting sixes when spectators demanded the same.
