Joe Root is fit to play first ODI: Eoin Morgan confirms

Sydney, Jan 13 (IBNS): England's limited overs captain Eoin Morgan has confirmed that Joe Root has recovered from illness and he his fir to play the  first one-day international against Australia in Melbourne on Sunday.

Root, who is the skipper of the Test squad, was taken to hospital with gastroenteritis on the final day of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney.

"Joe should be fit to play," Morgan was quoted as saying by BBC.

"He's a versatile player who can score in any strike-rate that is required," he said.

Morgan said Root is an important player for the squad.

Morgan said: "He's been a fantastic leader within the group and, on top of that, there's the weight of runs he's scored and the manner that he's scored them."

Australia defeated England in the Ashes series to win the trophy.
