Hamilton, New Zealand, Mar 13(IBNS) Maintaining an unbeaten record to top the group, New Zealand on Friday defeated Bangladesh by three wickets in the ICC World Cup match at Seddon Park.

Batting first, Bangladesh scored 288 for seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs while New Zealand reached the target with three wickets in hand and seven balls to spare.

Both the teams had already reached the quarter final stage. While New Zealand topped the group with 12 points from six straight wins, Bangladesh stood fourth with seven points from as many matches.

A third-wicket partnership of 131 between Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor rescued the New Zealanders after their top order batsmen Brendon McCullum (8) and Kane Williamson (1) were out while chasing a target of 289 set by Bangladesh.

Guptill scored his first World Cup hundred and his team's first of the tournament before he was caught for 105 from 100 balls. Taylor compiled 56.

Earlier, Bangladeshi batsman Mahmudullah scored an unbeaten and gritty 128 to take his team to a respectable position.
