New York, Sep 2 (IBNS): Russian tennis star, Maria Sharapova, defeated her 18-year old American opponent Sofia Kenin on Friday to enter into the fourth round of the US Open 2017.

The 30-year old tennis player outplayed Kenin 7-5, 6-2.

However, the Russian tennis icon has got involved into a verbal spat with fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki as the latter criticised the decision of putting Sharapova on the stadium court after getting into the US Open through a wild card, BBC report said.

After registering the win in the third round, Sharapova has hit back at Wozniacki.

Sharapova was quoted by the BBC as saying: "I'm a pretty big competitor. If you put me out in the parking lot of Queens in New York City, I'm happy to play there."

The former world number one entered into the US Open with a wild card as she is currently ranked at 146th.

She was suspended in 2016 after failing to pass the dope test.
