Vanuatu, Samoa & Fiji get the early wins

Dubai, Feb 19 (IBNS): There were easy wins for Vanuatu, Samoa and Fiji on day 1 of the 2017 ICC World Cricket League Qualifier – East Asia-Pacific in Bendigo, Australia, an official release said.

At Dower Park in Kangaroo Flat, Vanuatu won the toss and sent Indonesia in.

Apolinaire Liplip Stephen struck in the second over of the game to remove Anjar Tadarus and from there the Indonesian wickets fell at regular intervals.

Vanuatu’s off-spinner Jelany Chilia was the pick of the bowlers after he snared the vital wicket of Viraj Bhammar and finished with 3 for 10 off 9.2 overs.

Opener Joshua Rasu ensured Vanuatu claimed victory before lunch smashing 52 not out from just 36 balls.

In the other games, Samoa’s captain Ben Mailata led the way taking five (5) wickets and scoring 58 not out against Japan.

Chasing just 145 for victory Samoa’s Pritchard Pritchard attacked from the start of the Samoan innings scoring 28 off 17 balls before retiring hurt.

Samoa passed the target in the 26th over just four (4) wickets down.

In the final match of the day at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, Fiji recorded a strong win over the Philippines by six (6) wickets in a rain affected match.

Fiji’s Mohammed Imran Khan rolled through the Philippines’ batters taking 5 for 20 off 10 overs, while Karweng Ng top scored for the Philippines with 71.

Despite several rain showers interrupting play during the Fijian innings, they cruised past the target in the 38thover just four (4) wickets down.

Peni Volavola (67 not out) ensured Fiji stayed on track after the rain delay with a 90 run partnership with Seru Marutu Tupou (33 not out).

Play resumes tomorrow with the Philippines taking on Vanuatu, Indonesia plays Japan and an all-Pacific clash between Fiji and Samoa.

The six teams are competing for a position in the ICC’s World Cricket League Division 5. All matches will be live scored through here.

The ICC is delivering the tournament in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and with support from the Victorian Government through the Significant Sporting Events Program.
