Veteran cricket journalist and commentator Kishore Bhimani passes away

Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran cricket journalist and commentator Kishore Bhimani passed away on Thursday morning. He was 81.

Bhimani was admitted to the Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital on Sept 14. He expired on Thursday morning due to sudden cardiac arrest.

He was suffering from Covid Pneomonia (Lower Respiratory Tract Infection ) and various  other ailments.

Bhimani had remained a journalist and cricket commentator for many decades.

He is survived by his wife Rita Bhimani, a well known public relations expert, and son Gautam Bhimani, also a sports commentator and a quiz master.

Kishore Bhimani started his journalism career with The Statesman in Kolkata in late 60's. He joined the sports department of the paper in 1971 and subsequently took over as the sports editor.

He soon established himself as the cricket correspondent for The Statesman covering matches in England, Australia , New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, beside different places in the country. He covered more than 100 test matches. 

He also covered the historic Indian cricket tour in South Africa after the lifting of the ban.

Kishore also emerged as a popular sports commentator, mostly on cricket, both for All India Radio and Doordarshan. He would be remembered for bringing a literary flavour to his writings as well as to his commentry and remained an inspiration for many journalists.

He was closely associated with the Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club. He also served the CSJC as its president from 1978 to 1980.   

As the news of his demise surfaced, mournings poured in from all corners.

Former Indian cricketer Bishan Bedi tweeted, "RIP Kishore Bhimani..he was one of the good Old Fashioned Crkt writer who took Crkt writings like a player who takes to playing...Condolences to his Spouse Rita & Son Gautam.. GodBless All Always.. Fondly."

Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai tweeted, "Sad news to share.. one of the great characters of cricket commentary, an encyclopaedia on the sport, unafraid to voice a sharp opinion and a true cricket enthusiast and aficionado.. Kishore Bhimani has passed away.. Will be much missed RIP."
