AI advice turns risky? Three climbers rescued after getting stranded on California mountain

According to a Facebook post by the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, the three men from Roseville, California, set up camp at an elevation of approximately 8,400 feet on Saturday, August 29. They then left with daypacks at around 3 am on Sunday, August 30, to attempt the summit of Mount Shasta.

The group reached the summit at around 7 pm—well beyond the recommended noon turnaround time—and began their descent in darkness.

“An hour into their descent, the party called the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch to ask for directions, but eventually wandered off-route into the Mud Creek Canyon,” the Sheriff's Office said.

Later that night, one of the climbers fell and suffered a knee injury, according to authorities.

“The group became stranded in Mud Creek Canyon, and were forced to bivouac in the steep drainage until they were met the following morning by the USFS Climbing Rangers,” the statement said.

Medical assistance was provided, while the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Volunteers were deployed to help bring the climbers to safety.

“Fortunately, all three hikers and rescue teams returned to the trailhead without incident,” authorities said.

Climbers Relied Heavily on Google's Gemini AI
Following the rescue, the climbers reportedly told a Sheriff's Deputy that they had relied heavily on Google's Gemini AI while planning their trip, including for information about the route and recommendations on what supplies to pack.

Authorities described the reliance on AI as a “critical misstep”, saying Gemini had advised the group to carry significantly less food and water than they ultimately needed.

The problem became particularly serious after what was intended to be an eight-hour ascent turned into a multi-day ordeal.

“It is always advisable to call the local USFS Mount Shasta Ranger station ahead of your trip to ensure you have the most accurate information, and to never rely solely on AI for your trip planning,” the Sheriff's Office warned.

The incident highlights the risks of relying exclusively on AI-generated information for outdoor adventures, particularly in challenging mountain terrain where weather, route conditions and other hazards can change rapidly.
