Dhaka/New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday expressed sadness as 12,000 people lost shelter after a large number of shanties were destroyed in a fire tragedy at a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh's  Cox’s Bazar region.

"I’m heartbroken by Sunday’s fire at Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh - a place I know well & where 12,000 people are now without shelter," Guterres tweeted.

"Thanks to refugee volunteers, @UN teams & everyone responding," he said.
"Rohingya refugees have endured so much - we must not forget them," the UN chief said.

As many as 2,000 shanties were gutted as a fire broke out at a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar area of Bangladesh, leaving a large number of people homeless, media reports said on Sunday.
