Los Angeles/Xinhua/UNI: The number of COVID-19 cases in the western US state of Arizona spiked by 1,654 on Friday, the largest single-day increase, raising the total confirmed cases in the state to 32,918, reported the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).

Moreover, local Azcentral.com website reported Friday that inpatient hospitalizations for patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 in the Grand Canyon State hit its highest number on Thursday, with 1,336 hospitalizations, up from the previous high of 1,291 hospitalizations on Wednesday.

During the past two weeks, the state had reported higher daily increases in cases, deaths and hospitalization rates, the report said, raising an alarming question as to whether the state had done enough to slow the fatal disease spread before it rushed to reopen the economy about one month ago.
