Lima, Apr 9 (IBNS) At least 23 people were killed and 32 injured after a bus plunged into a river in the Andes Mountains near Cusco in south-eastern Peru, media reports said.

Rescue work is being hampered as the bus completely submerged in the  Mapacho river, local police have been quoted as saying.

The overnight bus that left the city of Puerto Maldonado on Thursday, was carrying passengers to the city of Cusco.

Some of the passengers were on their way to vote in Peru's presidential election to be held on Sunday.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Cusco and a nearby town.
