The incident occurred at around 2.30 am on Friday.

The deceased people are identified as Md Emon from Bhatpara area and Mohammad Jahangir, media reports said.

Police told Bangladeshi media that the deceased people had seven to eight cases filed against them, including robbery, murder, arms, and extortion cases.

Comilla Detective Branch (DB) of Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Porimol Chandra Das told Dhaka Tribune: "Acting on a tip-off, we along with members of Kotwali police station went to the Palpari Bridge area."

"As we reached the spot the robbers opened fire on us, forcing us to fire back in self defence," he said.
