Bangladesh: Actress Nusraat Faria, who played Sheikh Hasina onscreen, gets bail

Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria was released from prison on bail on Tuesday, a day after she was sent to jail in an attempted murder case.

At around 3:30pm on Tuesday she was released from Kashimpur Central Women's Jail in Gazipur, Senior Jail Superintendent Kawalin Nahar told The Dhaka Tribune.

Nusraat’s lawyer, Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain, told the newspaper that Judge Mustafizur Rahman of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court granted her bail after a hearing in response to the defense’s petition.

She was arrested on Sunday at Dhaka international airport in the attempted murder case filed at Vatara police station in Dhaka, linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

She was heading to Thailand when the arrest was made.

The case was registered against 17 actors, including Nusraat, for allegedly attempting to murder a student in Dhaka's Vatara during the violent protests that eventually led to the ouster of Hasina, who fled Bangladesh and took refuge in India in August 2024.

Also a model and presenter, Nusraat made her acting debut in 2015 with Ankush Hazra starrer Aashiqui. She has acted in several popular Bengali films both in Bangladesh and India.

She played Hasina in Mujib: The Making of a Nation, which was based on Bangladesh's founding father and first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
