Beijing: Activist Guo Feixiong has been barred from leaving China to reunite with his wife, media reports said.

The wife is suffering from cancer. She is currently in the United States.

The 54-year-old former human rights lawyer was prevented from leaving the country from Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Thursday evening, South China Morning Post reported.

In a text message he shared with the South China Morning Post, he said customs officials told him he could not leave and accused him of “endangering national security”.

“I was stopped at customs and not allowed to leave,” Guo’s message as quoted by the newspaper read.

According to media reports, the activist was jailed twice since 2006 over the publication of a book that exposed corruption in northeast Liaoning province. He was also reportedly jailed for taking part in a week-long rally against censorship in Guangzhou region of China.
