Canada likely not to support Michaëlle Jean in her bid to become Francophonie Secretary General

Ottawa, Oct 10 (IBNS): Canada has hinted at doing anything but supporting former Governor General Michaëlle Jean, who is running to become la-Francophonie Secretary General for the second time, media reports said.

Jean is the organisation's secretary general since 2014.

The organisation, which represents 80 states and governments with linguistic and cultural ties with France, will elect its new secretary general at its summit in Armenia.

According to media reports, Canada will not support Jean this time.

Jean is facing challenge from Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

Mushikiwabo has the support of French President Emmanuel Macron and African Union.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on his way to Armenia.

Melanie Joly, the federal minister responsble for Francophonie, is already in Armenia.

Joly's press secretary Jeremy Ghio has been quoted by CBC News as saying, "We have tremendous respect for Madame Jean's track record as secretary general of la Francophonie, particularly as it relates to the education ‎and empowerment of women and girls.

"With respect to the choice of the next secretary general, Canada will join the consensus view as is the organization's custom.
