Canada PM Justin Trudeau praises Michaelle Jean at Francophonie Summit

Yerevan, Oct 11 (IBNS): In his speech at the opening of the la Francophonie Summit in Armenia, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday praised Michaelle Jean, who is seeking the second term as the Francophonie Secretary General, media reports said.

Praising Jean, Trudeau praised the "remarkable work" of Jean, who is the former Canadian Governor General.

The Prime Minister has been quoted by CTV News,"Michaelle affirmed herself as an ardent defender of women, notably by asserting their right to education and fighting for their emancipation."

However, Canada has already hinted at doing anything but supporting Jean.

Jean is the organisation's secretary general since 2014.

The organisation, which represents 80 states and governments with linguistic and cultural ties with France, will select its new secretary general at its summit in Armenia. The selection will take place through consensus and not voting.

According to media reports, Canada will not support Jean this time.

Jean is facing challenge from Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

Mushikiwabo has the support of French President Emmanuel Macron and African Union.
