Canada-U.S. border for non-essential travel to remain closed for another month

Ottawa/IBNS: An extension to the closure of the Canada-US border for non-essential travel for another month due to fear of COVID-19 Pandemic spread was announced by Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Tuesday, media reports said.

"This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” Trudeau said and added that the premiers also wanted to keep Canada-U.S. border closed.

Trudeau said both US and Canada had agreed to keep the border closed.

Canada to date has seen more than 74,000 COVID-19 active cases with over 5,500 deaths, while in the U.S. there are more than 1.5 million active COVID-19 cases and over 90,000 deaths.

As parts of both countries are gradually reopening, the agreement prohibits visits across the border.

But the Canada-US border closure would not affect the flow of trade and commerce, as well as vital health-care workers such as nurses who live and work on opposite sides of the border.

The agreement between the two countries regarding this has been extended for the second time, after first being imposed in March, with the extension on border restrictions set to expire May 21.

Concerning the reopening of Canada-US borders to international visitors, Trudeau said the government is making decisions week to week based on a rapidly changing situation.
