Canada's alarming surge in COVID-19 cases worries health officials and lawmakers

Toronto/IBNS: The continuous surge in COVID-19 cases across Canada has alarmed health officials and lawmakers especially after multiple provinces set new records for single-day increases on Sunday, media reports said.

The provinces of Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan set new daily increase records, with Ontario reporting 1,328 new cases on Sunday, Quebec reporting an increase of 1,397, while Saskatchewan reported 159 new infections.

Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said in a statement Sunday that several regions are "experiencing accelerated growth" and asked Canadians to step up containment.

She also urged that the reduction in the number of new coronavirus cases would only possible by collective efforts by limiting close contacts to only those in your household, wearing a mask and adapting events to mitigate COVID-19 risks.
