China says Biden yet to be declared president as per US laws and procedures, refuses to acknowledge his victory

Washington/Beijing/IBNS: While leaders across the globe have congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden for his victory, media reports said China has declined to congratulate him stating the final result of the elections are yet to come out.

Donald Trump's four year tenure saw worsening of US China relationship with a costly trade war and US accusing China for mishandling the Coronavirus situation and making the World Health Organisation (WHO) its ally. The Trump regime also nettled Beijing with consistent attacks on human rights violations in Hong Kong and Xinjiang province.

"Our understanding is that the outcome of the election will be determined in accordance with US laws and procedures," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the press at a regular briefing on Monday.

China is among the few nations like Russia and Mexico which has not congratulated Biden on his win, though it said it had "noticed that Mr. Biden declared he is the winner of the election."

According to analysts, though Biden and Xi Jinping have worked together for greater US-China cooperation as vice-president, the former's approach towards Beijing has hardened over the last decade, which was reflected in Biden's biting criticism throughout his election campaign.

He lambasted China for its treatment of Uyighur Muslims in the western region of Xinjiang, its repressive actions in Hong Kong and even called the Chinese president a “thug.”

The recent actions on Huawei Technologies Co. and Bytedance Ltd.'s TikTok is likely to continue as Biden is expected to rein in Chinese assertiveness, which the US sees as a threat to the world order led by it, with the same force as Trump, working closely with allies.

However, unlike Trump, Biden has promised to work with traditional American partners like Japan, South Korea and Europe to get better of China from 5G to Hong Kong and business ties. Trump had, from time to time, accused them of taking advantage in defence commitments and cheating at trade.
