Beijing, Jan 1 (IBNS): At least 35 people were killed in a stampede in China's Shanghai city on Wednesday, media reports said on Thursday.

The mishap occurred  during New Year celebrations on the Chenyi Square of Shanghai's bund area  at around 11.35 pm, reports said.

Forty two people were injured in the accident.

A witness told Xinhua that some coupons that looked like "dollar bill" were being thrown from a building's third-floor window near the Bund and people standing along the river bank started to scramble for these coupons.

Officials are investigating the cause of the mishap.
