Cohen sues Trump organization for $3.8Mln in unpaid legal fees, costs

New York, Mar 7 (Sputnik/UNI) US President Donald Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen has filed a lawsuit against the Trump Organization in an attempt to recover some $3.8 million in unpaid legal fees and costs, court documents showed on Thursday.

The lawsuit, filed in New York State Court in Manhattan accuses the Trump organization of breaching a contract that would ensure that Cohen's legal expenses pertaining to the ongoing special counsel investigation would be covered by the Trump organization.

“This action arises from the Trump Organization's failure to meet its indemnification obligations under a contractual agreement between the Trump Organization Mr. Cohen, pursuant to which the Trump Organization agreed to indemnify Mr. Cohen and to pay attorney's fees and costs incurred by Mr. Cohen's work," the court filing said.

According to the court document, the Trump Organization agreed under the contractual agreement to cover costs incurred during congressional hearings, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and other matters.

"As of January 25, 2019, the amount of Mr. Cohen's unpaid legal fees and costs in connection with the Matters was approximately $1.9 million," the court document said.

In addition, Cohen is seeking reimbursement for another $1.9 million that he was ordered to pay as part of his criminal sentence arising from work he did for the Trump Organization.

Cohen alleged in the filing that the Trump Organization has refused to pay any of his fees or costs since May 2018.

Cohen was sentenced in December to three years in prison for tax fraud, lying to Congress and campaign finance violations that included making hush money payments to two women who claimed to have had sexual relations with Trump.
He remains out of prison to continue cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Both Trump and Russia have repeatedly denied the allegations.

Russia has repeatedly denied any attempt to influence the US election’s outcome, saying the allegations about interference were made up to excuse the defeat of a presidential candidate as well as deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption.
