Residents of Tainan city, on Taiwan's west coast, were jolted awake at about 4 amas the ground shook for nearly two minutes.

Rescue workers are trying to pull out people from under collapsed buildings that have toppled in Tainan city.

According to local reports, a 17-story apartment building with at least 150 housing units collapsed, trapping more than 30 people inside; office buildings slanted sideways, teetering above busy streets.

More than 220 people have been rescued from under the rubble so far.

To hasten up rescue operations, the government has mobilized the national army.
